Star Trek’s Biggest Unresolved Plot Holes—And How an Enterprise-G Spin-Off Can Honor Patrick Stewart’s Legacy

With the passing of Sir Patrick Stewart at age 86, the Star Trek community is mourning the loss of the actor who gave us Jean-Luc Picard—a character who defined leadership, moral clarity, and hope for generations. While Star Trek: Picard Season 3 gave Jean-Luc a fitting victory lap alongside his original crew, the series also left the door wide open for the future of Starfleet.

When you look across nearly 60 years, 1000+ TV episodes, and a dozen films, Star Trek has given us some of the greatest sci-fi storytelling in history. But let’s be honest: Starfleet also has a habit of dropping huge, galaxy-altering plot points and hyper-warping away, never to mention them again!

If Paramount moves forward with the heavily requested Star Trek: Legacy spin-off (or a spiritual successor to Picard), it would have a goldmine of unresolved lore to draw from. With Captain Seven of Nine in the big chair, Jack Crusher as Special Counselor, Ensign Sidney La Forge at the helm, and Lt. Commander Alandra La Forge in engineering, the Enterprise-G is uniquely positioned to carry Picard’s torch and clean up the galaxy’s leftover mysteries.

Here is a look at the biggest unresolved plot holes in the Star Trek canon, and how a new crew can finally resolve them.

1. The Biggest Unresolved Star Trek Plot Holes

While fan-favorite series sweep up some loose ends, several massive lore gaps still hang over the Alpha Quadrant:

The "Conspiracy" Parasites (TNG: "Conspiracy"): Season 1 of The Next Generation introduced terrifying neural parasites that infiltrated Starfleet Command. Before their queen was destroyed, a signal was sent into deep space to invite the rest of their species to Earth. Out-of-universe, the writers abandoned them in favor of creating the Borg—leaving an alien armada homing in on Earth that Starfleet completely ignored!

The Dyson Sphere (TNG: "Relics"): In TNG, the Enterprise-D discovers a vast, artificial megastructure capable of holding millions of worlds. Starfleet leaves a few survey ships behind, and... we never hear about it again in mainline TV canon. Who built it? Why was it abandoned? Why isn't the Federation using it to solve every housing and resource crisis in the galaxy?

The "Warp Speed Limit" (TNG: "Force of Nature"): In TNG Season 7, it's discovered that high-warp travel is literally tearing the fabric of subspace apart, prompting Starfleet to impose a "Warp 5 speed limit." While Voyager got variable-geometry warp nacelles to bypass it, Starfleet ships in later eras seem to warp around at maximum speed constantly without anyone caring about environmental damage anymore.

The Warp 10 Lizard Babies (VOY: "Threshold"): Captain Janeway and Tom Paris break the Warp 10 barrier, mutate into giant salamander-like creatures, mate, and leave three amphibious infants on an alien planet before being cured. Are those human-hybrid lizard kids still out there evolving?

The Fate of Sisko & The Prophets (DS9: "What You Leave Behind"): Benjamin Sisko ascends into the Celestial Temple, promising his pregnant wife, Kasidy Yates that he will return. Decades later in the timeline, we still haven't seen his grand return to the physical plane.

(Note on Star Trek Online: STO is officially considered beta canon. While it resolved things like the Dyson Sphere, the Parasites, and Sisko's return, live-action shows are free to overwrite or reinterpret those events completely.)

2. Storylines a Captain Seven/Enterprise-G Show Could Resolve

A series centered on Seven of Nine, Jack Crusher, and the La Forge sisters on the Enterprise-G isn't just nostalgia—it's the bridge between Picard's era and the future of the Federation.

UNRESOLVED LORE & ENTERPRISE-G NARRATIVE HOOK

A. The Residual Borg & Unimatrix Zero-

Picard Season 3 saw the final defeat of the core Borg Queen, but what happened to the rogue Borg? Back in Voyager, Seven helped free millions of drones into "Unimatrix Zero," creating a Borg Resistance movement.

The Story: Captain Seven of Nine faces a galaxy that still deeply distrusts ex-Borg, even as splinter factions of former drones try to build a peaceful civilization. Seven becomes the diplomatic bridge (and military protector) for ex-Borg searching for identity after the hive mind—honoring Picard's own lifelong struggle with his ex-Borg past.

B. The Parasite Infiltration 2.0 (Jack Crusher's Connection)-

If the "Conspiracy" bugs finally arrive in the 25th century, Jack Crusher is the perfect protagonist to deal with them. Inheriting a unique genetic receiver from his father's altered Borg DNA, Jack is sensitive to collective, biological signals. The Story: The parasites return to high-level Starfleet command, but standard scanners can't detect them. Jack's abilities allow him to perceive who has been compromised, putting him and Seven in a high-stakes, paranoid thriller reminiscent of classic TNG.

C. The Legacy of Geordi La Forge's Tech Secrets-

With Sidney at the helm and Alandra in engineering, the La Forge sisters carry the legacy of Starfleet’s greatest engineer. Geordi spent decades building the Fleet Museum, restoring ancient starships, and studying lost alien technology. The Story: The Enterprise-G encounters crises that can't be solved by 25th-century tech, forcing Alandra and Sidney to pull out "forgotten" science—like Iconian Gateway tech, the Dyson Sphere's power grid, or phased-cloaking devices—and field-test it under pressure.

D. The Dominion War Power Vacuum-

The post-Dominion War Alpha Quadrant is still fragile. With Cardassia destroyed, the Founders retreating, and the Romulan Empire collapsed, outer space is a lawless frontier. The Story: Seven of Nine spent years as a Fenris Ranger keeping peace on the lawless edges of space. As Captain of the flagship, her direct approach to diplomacy would clash with Starfleet bureaucracy as she tries to stabilize systems abandoned after the Dominion War.

Carrying the Torch

Sir Patrick Stewart's performance as Jean-Luc Picard taught us that humanity's greatest strength is its willingness to seek out understanding, face the unknown, and learn from past mistakes.

A Star Trek: Legacy-style series on the rechristened Enterprise-G has the rare opportunity to balance "Strange New Worlds" exploration with long-overdue canon cleanup. By letting Seven's grit, Jack's intuition, and the La Forge sisters' technical ingenuity take center stage, Starfleet can stop leaving its biggest galactic mysteries unresolved—and ensure Captain Picard's legacy lives on for generations to come.
